Groundwater nitrate (as N) was 10 mg/L and the limit was 8 mg/L. However, Well 2 is downgradient of more than 50,000 avocado trees that require addition of nitrogen fertilizer. According to the Morro Basin Nitrate Study
(City of Morro Bay, 2007), concentrations of nitrates increased in the basin
almost five-fold between 1980 and 2007. The study estimates the nitrogen
loading rate for mature avocado trees at 100 pounds per acre. |
