The effluent chloride and sodium exceedances are caused by residential and commercial use of water softeners as well as by the increase in the mineral concentrations in wastewater resulting from water conservation. The coliform exceedances were all caused by an excessive level of sludge in Pond 2 seeping into the effluent thereby contaminating it. |

Chronic Toxicity (Species 3) Daily Maximum limit is 1 TUc and reported value was 3 TUc at M-001. |
Our permit language does not provide clear guidance as to next steps when a detection occurs during accelerated monitoring so we utilized EPA guidance adopted from newer versions of Central Coast permits in an effort to be proactive and take the correct steps for forward. As such we ceased accelerated monitoring for S. capricornutum and initiated a Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) for this species. As there was no toxicity observed in the first accelerated test with C. dubia, we would continued with two more rounds of testing. If toxicity is not observed in the next two rounds, then accelerated monitoring would be completed and the discharger can return to routine monitoring. If any of the next two rounds of testing do observe toxicity, then accelerated monitoring would cease and C. dubia would be added to the TRE. At the time of this report all accelerated monitoring demonstrates compliance however we are waiting final sample set from the second round to know for sure. We will update the Regional Board and EPA once that data is available. |
