In a telephone call on October 7, 2025, the Salinas Industrial WWTF operator informed Central Coast Water Board staff of issues at the Salinas Industrial WWTF, and confirmed the odors were present. The operator stated that the aeration lagoon was grey and not operating as designed, likely from high levels of chlorine in the industrial WWTF influent. The City of Salinas reports that they have taken remedial steps by deploying up to six aeration pumps to aerate Pond 1 continuously over the course of five weeks, from September 19, 2025 to October 28, 2025. Additionally, on October 7, 2025, the City of Salinas sent formal notification letters1 to all permitted indirect industrial dischargers, which referenced specific chlorine handling and disposal requirements and the importance following these procedures. |
