Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) (5-day @ 20 Deg. C) Monthly Average (Mean) limit is 30 mg/L and reported value was 35.3 mg/L at M-001. |
We have since had our main aerator rebuilt and put back into service. We are in the process of ordering another aerator for redundancy. We have installed a recirculation line to recirculate water from the effluent of lagoon number two back to the influent of lagoon number one to introduce microbes to the stabilization lagoon. |

Typically and historically there is a correlation between the results of suspended solids and BOD in which they are close together in results. Given that the samples the week before and the week after were within permit limits, we believe this higher than normal BOD result could be the result of a sampling or lab error. When the news of the exceedance was presented to us we did an investigation of the effluent and didn¿t find anything unusual. |

Two of the aerators were sent into the electrical repair shop and the internals were replaced and housing repaired. This process was time consuming which led to a change in the biology within the lagoons. Once received the aerators were reinstalled into the lagoons with new power cords as needed. When reintroducing added oxygen to the lagoon system there is a ¿ripening¿ period that I believe we are in currently, I anticipate this will be a temporary issue with our elevated BOD levels that we will have to endure until the biology of the lagoons is once again balanced.
Additional corrective actions:
- Adjusted effluent transfer pipe leaving lagoon two
- Cleaned effluent sump basin
- Raked sand filter spray fields
- Increased chlorination dose
- Increased dissolved oxygen sampling

To prohibit further reproduction of algae, HRCSD staff has reduced aeration to provide the algae with less oxygen. Additionally, intake of effluent from the lagoon to the pump station is being lowered, which helps get the intake out of the higher algal zone. Staff has also implemented thorough raking of the sand filter spray fields to decrease short circuiting and improve filtration. |
