Additional Remarks
Water right A026028 is the diversion license for Spanish Mine, Adit 3, which has been discharging toxic mine waste water into a fish-bearing stream since the mine closed decades ago. Soper Co.(who purchased the land years after the mines closed) worked with the RWQCB to develop a process for treating the water where the polluted waters are diverted into filtration ponds where wood chips interact to precipitate the toxins from the water. The cleaned water then drains out into a pipe system where it leaches into soil and back into the watercourse. Tests since development of this process show it succeeding quite well in removing toxins and returning clean water into the natural watercourse. This use of water is very important to maintaining the treatment of mine waste water. Gallons of water used is estimated from amount licensed for diversion and proportioned to estimated annual water flow fluctuations during a year.
