Description of water conservation efforts |
The Company maximizes beneficial use of water through implementation of numerous water conservation efforts including the installation of variable frequency drives at several pumping plants, installation and operation of a Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) System, irrigation scheduling, weed management programs, canal lining, pipeline installation, water conservation programs for landowners, and educational programs for Company staff and landowners. Individual landowners have also implemented numerous water conservation efforts including, but not limited to land leveling, irrigation scheduling, varietal changes, crop shifts, drainage improvements, reduced spill from rice fields, and minimum tillage techniques. The quantity of water conserved through these efforts has not been quantified.
In 2014, approximately 6,188 acres were fallowed in 2014 some lands were planted to crops with lower water demands. These landowner actions together with other actions taken by the Company in response to the drought resulted in a reduction in diversions from the Sacramento River during the months of April-October of approximately 60,000acre-feet as compared to the same period in 2013.
The Company operates and extensive tailwater recovery and recirculation system. In 2014 the Company recirculated a total of 74,162AF. Absent recapture and recirculation this additional quantity of water would have been diverted from the Sacramento River to meet the demands within the Company. Credit for the quantity conserved through recapture and recirculation prior to curtailment of the water rights by the SWRCB on May 27 has been allocated and reported under individual water rights of the Company based on their priority.
